Types of SiriusXM™ Radio Receivers

Sirius and XM Radio made several different types of satellite radio receivers throughout the years. Each type of a receiver had a specific type of use. Below is a list of the different types of satellite radio receivers.

Plug and Play / Dock and Play Receivers

These receivers allow the listener to take SiriusXM™ Radio with them in the car, home, boat, motorcycle, RV, truck, UTV, beach, and more. A plug and play receiver is about the size of a hand and can be used with various accessory kits for installation. Factory installed Radios (OEM)

A radio installed in a vehicle at the factory in called an OEM installed stereo/radio. Usually factory installed radios come equipped with the necessary parts to receive SiriusXM™ Radio in the stereo. If the radio does not have the necessary hardware to get SiriusXM™ Radio then you can add a third party installation kit with a specific module that allows you to receive SiriusXM™ Radio service. These installation kits include a module to translate the SiriusXM™ Radio programming, wiring harness, and antenna. Click here to browse the list of compatible vehicles.

Direct Home Tuners

XM Direct home tuners were designed to connect directly to the back of a home stereo system and would translate the SiriusXM service so the stereo could play the music and show the meta data on the front panel/display of the home tuner. It can in 2 different forms over the years. The original was integrated into the antenna (with the SiriusXM tuner in the antenna) and the second generation became a small device that connected to a SiriusXM antenna and then connected to the home tuner.

Direct Vehicle Tuners for Aftermarket Stereos

Stereos that are not factory installed are called aftermarket stereos or radios. You may be familiar with the brands such as SONY, Alpine, JVC, Clarion, Jensen and others. These stereos can come equipped with the ability to control SiriusXM™ Radio service but will need SXV300V1 SiriusXM™ Radio tuner which plugs into the back of the stereo. This tuner allows the aftermarket stereo to translate programming and display it on the radio. Included with the SXV300V1 tuner is the NGVA3 magnetic car antenna. In order for the SXV300V1 to get signal the antenna needs to be mounted outside of the vehicle, preferably on the roof or trunk.

Aviation & Weather

With SiriusXM Aviation, pilots can fly worry-free with the weather and information they need. Marine / Weather / Fishing / Audio

SiriusXM Marine delivers the graphical weather and fishing info your customers need, and the entertainment they want directly to the chartplotter/MFD on their boats. Designed for cruising or fishing blue water, inshore, and the Great Lakes, there is a subscription package that will let your customers boat with confidence and enhance their time on the water, well beyond cell phone range.

Available in three service levels, SiriusXM Marine lets boaters monitor storm fronts, track lightning strikes, see wind and wave forecasts, water temperatures and more. In addition, they can control satellite radio through their chartplotter/MFD or a SiriusXM-Ready marine headunit when they add audio at a discount to their Marine service. With the SiriusXM All Access audio plan, boaters get the additional flexibility to listen outside their boat, on their computers, smartphones and tablets.
